D5  (1922)

This car was sold new in Melbourne, Australia by agents Jones and Levy in 1922. It was fitted with a coupe body by coach-builder Apex Body Works. Jones and Levy and Apex were both located in Brunswick Road, Fitzroy, an inner suburb of Melbourne.  The original owner was Arthur Miller of Nhill in North West Victoria and it was said that he made the purchase with earnings from a horse race.  Arthur passed the car on to his brother Bill, possibly during the Great Depression.  Bill stored the car in a shed until his passing in 1966 after which it was sold to Gordon Priest in Adelaide.  The present owner wrote to Gordon  in 1967 having at the time just acquired a model D3A.  No answer was received until 1983 when a letter arrived saying "Sorry to have been so long in answering your letter but the car is now in bits at the Gold Coast in Qld, do you want it?"  The car had been dismantled but never driven or restored.   The present owner took up the offer to purchase and restoration was completed in 2006 after more than 3000 hours of work by authentic restoration specialist Greg Doyle of Armidale, NSW.  The car is exceptionally original with hood fabric, seating leather, alloy floor cladding, wiring and tyres being the only major new components.

This car was taken to Germany in 2007 for the significant occasion of a "Return to Stettin" rally during which 14 Stoewer cars, some half a dozen family descendants including Bernhard Stoewer's grand-daughter Jutte Barckmann and several former company employees, made a pilgrimage to the original factory buildings and to the country home of founding engineer, Bernhard Stoewer Jnr.  Greg Doyle accompanied the owner on this occasion.
