In 1936, just one year after the Government authorities dictated that no German company was permitted to build front-wheel-drive cars, the German Army let a contract for the development of a light, 4-wheel-drive, general purpose vehicle.  This was 6 years before the US developed their Jeep.  Stoewer, with its experience in front-wheel-drive won this contract.  They based the new vehicle on the R180 front-wheel-drive motor car, but in addition to adding 4-wheel-drive they added 4-wheel-steering.
